WRKE Named Student Organization of the Year for a Second Consecutive Year

SALEM, VA- WRKE is excited to announce that it has been named the student organization of the year for the 2017/2018 academic year. Sharing the honor with the Roanoke College Garden Club, this is the second year in a row the station has claimed the honor.

The award comes off of WRKE’s historic year that included¬†joint collaborations, remote broadcasts, live audience shows, radio dramas, a reality game competition, and a record breaking staff of 70 students with 40 shows.

“It is such an honor to not only be named student organization of the year, but to be named student organization of the year in back to back years,” Program Director Elijah Wilhelm said. “The committee tries to spread the honor around to as many groups as possible so to receive this again tells me that we are clearly doing something right.”

With all of the improvements WRKE has made, recognition for the station is growing in ways outside of just the award. Over the past year recognition has included a painted WRKE mural on the resource development building and coverage in the RC newspaper, The Brackety-Ack, including the most recent release which called Outlast one of the top events of the semester. WRKE will also be featured in the RC magazine coming out this summer.

“When we won the award last year,” Wilhelm said, “The immediate feeling that I had was that’s great, now let’s do it again. Clearly my staff felt the same way because here are. And we could not have done this without them or the countless people in student activities, the theatre, athletics, public relations, and campus saftey who have helped us put events together, and spread the word. It is really such a wide spread effort and I am so proud of what we have accomplished.”
