WRKE Show of the Month: September 2018

WRKE (Salem, VA)- WRKE is excited to announce it’s Show of the Month for September! Each month, WRKE admin will choose and highlight a show that goes above and beyond in the planning, producing, and execution of their show.

The show of the month for September is Pop Music Power Hour. The show is a mix of music and commentary on pop culture, trends, social phenomena and all things related. The show is hosted by senior Shamira James. She’s from Baltimore, MD (like 7 minutes from Downtown, not any of that “I’m from Hagerstown so like essentially Baltimore” mess…) James is majoring in communication studies with a minor in creative writing. She’s also the creative director and section editor for the Brackety-Ack and a RA in Marion Hall.

“Pop Music Power Hour is just a lot of fun,” Program Director Elijah Wilhelm said. “Shamira has the gift of gab so she would talk if one person was listening or if 100 people we’re listening but the reason I think people love listening to her is because who she is as a person shows in her work. When you’re listening to her you can tell that she genuinely feels and cares about everything she says, and that’s what we want on the radio – people who care.”

“I’ve always been really passionate about pop culture because it’s what shapes our time,” James said. “When I look at pop culture from the 80’s, 90’s or even early 2000s, things that were culturally relevant back then truly made those times what they were, so that’s what I do my show. I focus on what makes this time truly this time.”

“I know how busy Shamira is, as she always loves to point it out, but she still puts together a good show every week on top of everything,” Wilhelm said. “And what I also appreciate is how she always wants to improve. She works close with Rick Mattioni to always better her technical skills as well as her on-air skills and she will continue to excel at WRKE and on after.”

You can catch Pop Music Power Hour Saturdays from 1-2, ONLY on WRKE
